Haines & Hinterding
(Dharug and Gundungurra/Blue Mountains)
David Haines and Joyce Hinterding have worked both collaboratively and independently for more than two decades, exploring the unseen forces that shape our lived experience. Their multidisciplinary practice which is celebrated for both artistic excellence and a remarkable creative intelligence ,spanning antennae, scent, photography, drawing, and performative actions, using these materials and methods to reveal phenomena that usually escape perception. By transforming their initial scientific investigations into refined, poetic provocations, Haines & Hinterding challenge the dominance of vision—disrupting the assumptions of ocularcentrism and inviting audiences to sense the world differently.
Their large-scale artworks often aim to reveal what is unseen and unheard, drawing on both Hinterding’s investigations into energetic forces and Haines’ interest in the intersection of hallucination and the environment.
Haines and Hinterding live and work in the Blue Mountains outside of Sydney on Darug and Gundengurra Country. They have both held positions as Senior lecturers at Sydney College of the Arts, Sydney. The MCA featured their work in the survey exhibition Energies Haines & Hinterding, and in 2016 they produced an extensive monograph exhibition titled Résonances Magnétiques – La Panacée, Montpellier, France. Their work has been exhibited extensively in Australia and internationally in many major contemporary and experimental art spaces including the 2022 Sydney Biennale; Tate Liverpool; La Panacée, Montpellier; The Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney; Artspace, Auckland; Institute of Modern Art, Brisbane; and The Contemporary Art Centre of South Australia, and have also exhibited in biennials in Adelaide, Istanbul, Kuandu, Sydney, Sao Paulo, and Tarrawarra, and been shortlisted to represent Australia at the Venice Biennale on two occasions.
