Riley Beaumont
(b. 1992, based in Ngambri and Ngunnawal/Melbourne)
is a Melbourne-based painter whose practice occupies the contested territory between abstraction and painting in the expanded field. Trained in Printmaking and Drawing before completing Honours in painting at the ANU School of art in 2016, Beaumont brings a sustained material intellect to his work, one shaped by process and intention.
His paintings resist resolution. Working across scale. Beaumont mobilises fire, smoke, stencil, accretion and gestural mark-making as equal participants within his practice, treating his work less as a destination than a site of ongoing negotiation. The translation between small drawing study and large scale painting is central to this enquiry, a method where the body’s physical role in mark-making becomes structurally visible. Beaumont holds roughness and lyricism in tension and each work a layered record of decisions…made, unmade and made again.
