Gigi Malherbe

Gigi Malherbe’s practice predominantly focuses on fragmented vision, aspects of her cultural heritage and ways of seeing. Drawing from her experience of living with a vision impairment that impacts light perception, Malherbe uses recurring motifs of light fixtures, fires and spotlit or concealed portraits to convey her relationship with light and darkness. Sourcing images from her own photos, sometimes using flash, infrared or torches in dark spaces to create scenes, Malherbe builds intimate and personal glimpses of her experience through rendering these compositions in high contrasting or blurred acrylic palettes.

Gigi Malherbe is an artist based in Eora/Sydney, who graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from National Art School in 2022, majoring in painting. She has been a finalist in various prizes including the 2022 Sir John Sulman Prize, the Waverley Art prize and a recipient of the Brett Whitely Travelling Scholarship Prize, undergoing a residency at Shark Island Institute Kangaroo Valley in 2025. Her work was shown at Sydney Contemporary Art Fair in 2023 with the National Art School booth and is held in multiple collections including the National Art School archive and various private collections across Australia. Malherbe has featured in various publications including Art Collector Magazine, Russh Magazine and A-M Journal.
