Mike Parr

Mike Parr (b. 1945, Gadigal/Sydney) is one of Australia’s most influential contemporary artists. Working across performance, drawing, printmaking, installation and video, Parr is best known for a decades-long body of endurance-based performance works that use his own body to interrogate identity, language, trauma and power. His practice often engages with political issues including colonial violence, displacement, and the limits of institutional authority. In 1970, Parr co-founded the groundbreaking artist-run space Inhibodress with Peter Kennedy and Tim Johnson, which became a major incubator for conceptual and performance art in Australia. Parr’s performances, drawings and prints probe identity, memory, and psychological limits through his own body. He represented Australia at the Venice Biennale in 1980, and in recent decades has exhibited widely across Europe, Asia, the Americas, and Latin America. His work is held in significant public and private collections worldwide.
